where LEARNING flows…

‘Let the uniqueness of your child guide our work.’

Waka Huia’s philosophy is grounded in Te Whāriki which supports a holistic approach to nurturing the ‘whole child’ - mind, body and spirit. Through the principles of empowerment (Whakamana), holistic development (Kotahitanga), family and community (Whānau Tangata) and relationships (Ngā Hononga), children are given time and space to potter and play and from this, learning grows. Our teachers support this learning through close and attentive planning and assessment. We focus on nature, relationships and allowing learning and confidence to flow and grow naturally.

Our alignment with the core values of the Reggio Emilia approach, means we focus on child-centred learning, collaboration, respect and the environment as an essential layer to teaching. We value children’s innate creativity and curiosity and encourage expression through the many forms of creative arts. Through our beliefs in aesthetics and beauty, children develop a respect for the spaces they inhabit.

‘We provide foundations for the future, based on learning and curiosity’

Transitioning from early childhood education to school is a pivotal moment for young children. At Waka Huia Childcare we see this as a holistic process and an extension of their time with us. The nurturing pathway from transitioning into Waka Huia and then out and into primary school is one that our teachers support, in collaboration with families.

I come not with my own strengths

but bring with me the gifts, talents

AND strengths of my family,

tribe and ancestors.
